The Alpha Beta Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. is a real brotherhood with tested and abiding fellowship, a brotherhood that calls for and gladly gives its best in the hour of need. It is a spiritual fellowship that binds us in all activities along life's narrow pathway. Upon it rests the social welfare of each brother.
Scholarship is highly esteemed as a necessary development for a keen precept of sound judgment. Scholarship expresses itself not only in the acquisition of a superior mind, but also in superior character. The ideal of scholarship is kept uppermost in our minds so that we may be a beacon of light among men.
Service is a keystone of all activities, the source of all joy, the basis of all happiness, and the fountain of all love from which all mankind may drink. A fruitful life is one that is spent for the blessings of others. Members of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. are always on the alert to find opportunities for service to the community.
Every winter around Christmas, the brothers of Alpha Beta Sigma come together to visit and spend time with our adopted retirement/nursing home. This is a nearly 25 year service commitment that Alpha Beta Sigma Chapter has had the pleasure to partake in. The brothers dig deep into their pockets and give from the heart so that those whose families are unable to visit as frequent in their later years of life can have a bit of Christmas joy.
We have a special program for them that consists of Christmas music (live and DJ), special blessings from the Chapter Chaplan and a visit from “Sigma Claus”. We provide our honored guests with a meal cooked by the brothers and provide each with a gift bag that with timely gifts. Our Sigma Beta Club members assist with this event and their participation is really appreciated by the brothers and the seniors that we serve.
What a blessing to be able to sing Christmas songs with them and lend an ear at this special time of year.
In 1950 Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity became the first Greek organization to develop a youth auxiliary group. Under the direction of Dr. Parlette L. Moore the Sigma Beta Club was founded. Brother Moore was concerned about our changing needs in our communities and recognized the important role that Sigma men could play in the lives of our youth.
The Sigma Beta Clubs’ four major principles of focus are on Culture, Athletics, Social & Educational needs. The Sigma Beta Club offers a unique opportunity to develop values, leadership skills and social/cultural awareness in our youth during their developmental years. Sigma Beta Club programs are geared to meet the needs of its members, but at the same time provide them with a well-rounded outlook that is needed to cope with today’s society. Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. is confident that investing in our youth today will produce the effective leaders of tomorrow. Sigma Beta Club programs are geared to meet the needs of its members, while at the same time providing them with a well rounded outlook that is needed to cope with today’s society.
For over 80 years Alpha Beta Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma has given back to the City of Houston and The Westberry-Engram Sigma Education Foundation through our Annual Orchid Ball.
